aMazing Myanmar: tour description


Day 1: Amsterdam - Bangkok - Yangon

Departure from Amsterdam via Bangkok to Myanmar

Day 2: Yangon

In the morning we arrive in Yangon, also known as Rangoon. After breakfast in our hotel, we will explore the city. We visit the Sule pagoda, the hart of Yangon and frequented by the locals. Today's highlight is the Schwedagon pagoda, 98 meters high and covered in gold, towering above the city. We have dinner in a traditional restaurant.

Day 3: Yangon

We drive westward trough one of the most scenic areas of Azerbaijan. On the way we visit the Diri Baba Mausoleum, carved out of a cliff, and the large Yeddi Gumbaz mosque from the 10th century, and the tomb of the Royal family of Shirvan Kahn.

Day 4: Via Mandalay to Maymyo

This morning we fly to Mandalay and then drive along a magnificent route though the mountains to Maymyo, situated at 1100 meters. After lunch we visit the B.E waterfalls and big Buddha Statue. After a late afternoon a city tour by horse carriage, we vitis the botanic gardens to watch the beautifull sunset. Diner and overnight at Maymyo.

Day 5: To Mandaly

After visiting the Maymyo local market we drive to Mandaly. In the afternoon we visit the Mahamuni pagoda. The statue we'll see here is not only an icon depicting Buddha, but is regarded to be holy in itsself. We see the Schwe Kyaung monastery, famous for its intricate woodwork and the Kutadow pagoda, also known as "the worlds largest book" because of its numerous Buddhist inscriptions. We stay in Mandaly for three nights.

Day 6: Amrapura, Ava and Sagaing

We drive to Amarapura where we first visit the U-Bein bridge, a famous bridge made out of teak wood and afterwards we observe the meal procession at Mahagandayon monastery. We then take a boat to Ava, where we make a sight seeing tour by horse carriage. In the afternoon we go to the hills of Sagaing, which are dotted with temples, pagoda's and monasteries. Overnight in Mandalay.

Day 7: Mingun

After an early breakfast, we make a beautifull trip to Mingun, where one of the things we see is the Mingun Bell, the largest bell in the world. In the afternoon we drive back to Mandaly, where you'll have some time off. Diner and overnight at the hotel in Mandalay.

Day 8: To Bagan

We take an early morning boat and to sail down the Irrawaddy river towards Bagan, one of the highlights of Myanmar. This vast plain is dotted with numerous temples, pagodas and ruins. The afternoon is free. We'll stay in Bagan for the next three nights.

Day 9: Bagan

Today we'll visit some of Bagan's best known pagodas and also the marvelous and well conserved Ananda temple. Bagan is also the center of the famous Burmese laquer ware. Afther lunch we'll visit a workshop to see how this l aquerware is crafted. During dinner we'll enjoy a traditional puppet show. Overnight in Bagan.

Day 10: Bagan

In the village of Myinkaba we get to see the traditional way of life of the people of Myanmar and we'll visit some of the more exotic temples of Bagan. In the later afternoon we'll take tour by a horse carriage that can go places that cars can't reach. In the evening we'll see the Bapaya stupa on the banks of the Irrawaddy river. Diner and overnight in Bagan.

Day 11: Via Heho to Pindaya

We take a morning flight from Bagan to Heho and drive on to Pindaya. In the villages of the Shan people that we visit, we can see how they produce paper and parasols. We take a brisk walk to the Pindaya Caves, where we find over 8000 statues of Buddha that have been placed there over the centuries. Diner and overnight in Pindaya.

Day 12: To Inle Lake

We start the day by driving to Inle Lake, a beautifully situated mountain lake. It measures 11 by 22 kilometers and is locate at an altitude of 900 meters. This is the home of the Intha people, famous for their way of rowing their boats using one leg. We visit the Phaung Daw Oo pagoda and the Ngaphechaung monastery where monks specialize in training cats. We see the villages of Nampan, where the people make cigars, and Inn Paw Kone where silk is being produced. Diner and overnight at Inle Lake.

Day 13: Via Heho to Pindaya

In the morning we go to the markter where the Shan people trade their products. Then we visit the temples of Indein form the 17th and 18th century. They have been built in a completelt different style than the ones we've seen so far. The afternoon is free. Diner and overnight at Inle Lake.

Day 14: Via Heho to Pindaya

Transfer to Nyaung Schwe. Along the route we'll see the Schwe Yan Pyay monastery. From Heho we fly back to Yangon. On the way to our hotel we visit the Naga glass factory. Afterwards you'll have some free time to get your last souvenirs. Diner and overnight in Yangon.

Day 15: Via Heho to Pindaya

Transfer to the airport for the flight home. We fly via Bangkok to Amsterdam.

Day 16: Via Heho to Pindaya

Arrival at Schiphol airport.
