A week of culture: tour description


Day 1: Amsterdam - Tbilisi

Arrival in Tbilisi and transfer to the hotel. Welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant.

Day 2: Tbilisi

Tbilisi, which lies along the Silk Road, has a history which is long and rich. Tblisi was known as the Paris of the former Soviet Union and is the cultural center of Georgia. We will take a walking tour through the ancient part of the city. In the afternoon we will visit the city museum.

Day 3: Tbilisi - Mtskheta - Uplistsikhe - Gori - Tbilisi

We drive via the Georgian Military Highway to Mtscheta, a UNESCO world cultural heritage attraction and the ancient capital of Georgia. Mtskheta is home to the first Georgian Christian church, the 6th/7th century Jvari Monastery and the Sveti-Tskhoveli Cathedral. Gori, the birthplace of the Soviet leader Josef Stalin, is the next stop. After a city tour and visit to Stalin's house and museum we continue to the cave city Uplistsikhe. This city was carved out of the sandstone in the 2nd century B.C. and populated until well into the 19th century. Houses, temples, streets, and Roman theatres were carved out of the cliffs. Here we also see an intact basilica from the year 600.

Day 4: Tbilisi - Yerevan

Today we drive to Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. We will have several excursions from Yerevan. On the way, we enjoy the beautiful view over Lake Sevan. We'll stay in Yerevan for three nights.

Day 5: Yerevan - Khor Virap - Echmiadzin - Yerevan

We take a city tour and drive to Khor Virap to experience a wonderful view of Mount Ararat (16,854 feet), where Noah's Arc once stood. In the afternoon we visit the Echmiadzin Cathedral. This is the oldest and most beautiful church in Armenia and the center of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Day 6: Yerevan - Garni - Yerevan

On our last day we visit the Roman temple in Garni (1st century) and the 13th century Geghard monastery. The afternoon is free, so you can visit the local market to get some hand-made souvenirs, or just sit down at a local café or a terrace and relax in the shade.

Day 7: Yerevan - Tbilisi

After breakfast we return by coach to Tbilisi. We stop along the way to visit the spectacular Hagpad Monastary.

Day 8: Tbilisi - Amsterdam

We depart from the hotel and transfer to the airport for our return flight to Amsterdam.
