Discover the Caucasus: tour description

Day 1: Schiphol - Baku
Arrive in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. When traveling from Amsterdam, we fly via Vienna.
Day 2: Baku
Full day city tour with visits to historical and architectural monuments, parks, caravansaries and
museums, Muslim pilgrimage sites, as well as carpet and souvenir shops. Dinner in traditional
restaurant.
Day 3: Baku - Shemakha - Sheki
We drive westward trough one of the most scenic areas of Azerbaijan. On the way we visit the
Diri Baba Mausoleum, carved out of a cliff, and the large Yeddi Gumbaz mosque from the
10th century, and the tomb of the Royal family of Shirvan Kahn.
Day 4: To Georgia
We cross the Azerbaijani-Georgian border and drive to Kaketi, a region famous for its delicate wines.
We will also visit the Gremi-Architectural complex of the 16th century. The Ikalto academy is on the agenda
after lunch followed by a wine tasting in Tsinandali. Dinner and overnight at a guesthouse in Telavi.
Day 5: Telavi - David Gareja - Tbilisi
Today we visit the 4th-century David Gareja monastery complex, one of Georgia's greatest attractions.
This monastery is sculpted out of the cliffs and lies on a steep hill in a desert, steppe area. We tour the complex on foot.
Afterwards, we drive to Tbilisi, capital of Georgia.
Day 6: Tbilisi
Tbilisi, which lies along the Silk Road, has a history which is long and rich. Tblisi was known as the
Paris of the former Soviet Union and is the cultural center of Georgia. We will take a walking tour through
the ancient part of the city. In the afternoon we will visit the National Museum.
Day 7: Tbilisi
Today you will have the day off, so you can rest, take a walk though Tbilisi's old city center, or go shopping
at the lively Rustaveli Avenue.
Day 8: Tbilisi - Mtskheta - Gudauri
We drive via the Georgian Military Highway to Mtscheta, a UNESCO world cultural heritage attraction and the
ancient capital of Georgia. Mtskheta is home to the first Georgian Christian church, the 6th century
Jvari Monastery. We continue via the beautifull Georgian Military Highway to Gudauri.
Day 9: To Kazbegi
On our way to Kazbegi we drive by minivan through the great mountain landscape of the Caucasus. From Kazbegi we
take jeeps up the mountain to the small Tsminda Sameba church. Weather permitting, we will have a great view of
Mount Kazbeg (16,558 feet).
Day 10: Gudauri - Tbilisi
After breakfast we drive back to Tbilisi. We will make a stop at Mtshketa to visit the Svetotshkoveli cathedral.
Ancient legend has it that a part of the robe of Christ is burried here. You will have the afternoon free to spend
in Tbilisi.
Day 11: To Armenia
Today we drive to Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. We visit the Haghpad Monastry Complex and we enjoy the view over
Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, along the way. We will stay in Yerevan for three nights.
Day 12: Yerevan - Ararat - Echmiadzin
We take a city tour and drive to Khor-Virap to experience a wonderful view of Mount Ararat (16,854 feet),
where Noah's Arc once stood. In the afternoon we visit the Echmiadzin Cathedral. This is the oldest and most
beautiful church in Armenia and the center of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Day 13: Yerevan - Garni - Yerevan
On our last day we visit the Roman temple in Garni (1st century) and the 13th century Geghard monastery, a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. The afternoon is free, so you can visit the local market to get some great hand-made souvernis,
or just sit down on a terrass and relax in the shade.
Day 14: Yerevan - Amsterdam
Transfer from our hotel to the airport and flight back to Amsterdam, via Vienna.
